Leukemia: A Life Threatening Disease

Leukemia is a type of cancer which starts in the blood forming tissues of the body like the bone marrow. The bone marrow in affected people produce a large number of white blood cells. For few days they behave and function normally. But gradually they grow in large numbers and displace the normal white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. This results in impairing the normal function of the blood to carry oxygen in all parts of the body.

There are four basic types of Leukemia that affects the people of different age group. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia found in people above 55, Chronic Myeloid leukemia prevelant in adults, Acute lymphocytic leukemia often diagnosed in children and found in adults too, and Acute myeloid leukemia occurs both in adults as well as children.

Extensive medical research have revealed that the early signs of leukemia are vague and some symptoms can be seen in non-cancer patients too. The affected person feels fatigue due to the over production of white blood cell this process uses all your energy, weight loss, increased production of white cells use up calories, unexplained headache, confusion, malaise, abnormal bleeding, excessive bruising (hematoma), abdominal pain, bone or joint pain, unexplained chronic infections that never seems to go away.

There would be fever, enlarged liver, spleen and lymph nodes. In some cases of leukemia here would be no significant sign and symptoms until and unless the disease has become chronic.
