Low Back Pain Guide

Low Back pain, also known as lumbago is the  mild to severe pain or discomfort in the area of the lower back. This can be either acute (sudden and severe) or chronic if it has lasted more than three months. It is quite common in young people, who perform physical effort and in people of retirement age.

Causes
The most common causes of low back pain are:

  • Injury or overuse of muscles, ligaments, facet joints, and the sacroiliac joints.
  • Pressure on nerve roots in the spinal canal. Nerve root compression can be caused by:
    • A herniated disc, often brought on by repeated vibration or motion or by a sudden heavy strain or increased pressure to the lower back.
    • Osteoarthritis (joint degeneration)
    • Spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis
    • Spinal stenosis, or narrowing of the spinal canal
    • Fractures of the vertebrae caused by significant force
    • Spinal deformities, including curvature problems such as severe scoliosis or kyphosis.
  • Compression fractures.

Less common spinal conditions that can cause low back pain include:
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Bacterial infection
  • Spinal tumors, or growths that develop on the bones and ligaments of the spine, on the spinal cord, or on nerve roots.
  • Paget's disease
  • Scheuermann's disease

Other medical conditions that can cause pain that may be similar to low back pain include:
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease.
  • Aortic aneurysm.
  • Peptic ulcers.
  • Gallbladder disease.
  • Pancreatitis.
  • Urinary disorders such as kidney stones or urinary tract infections.
  • Prostate disease.

Symptoms
  • Tenderness in the lower back.
  • Pain that radiates from the lower back down the legs.
  • Lower back pain accompanied by abdominal pain.
  • Pain in the lower back that occurs when bending or twisting.
  • Severe lower back pain that causes discomfort in any position whether standing, sitting, or lying down.
  • Muscle spasms.
  • Onset of bowel or bladder incontinence with lower back pain is serious

Natural Cures
  • Rub the area with Arthcare oil. Massage helps to fix the displaced muscles or ligaments.
  • Ginger roots inhibit the production of elements like leukotrienes and prostaglandins that triggers inflammation and pain
  • Hot water treatment and exercises are the most common and even the best natural remedies for lower back pain. They reduce the tension of the muscles or nerves and at the same time make them elastic and flexible.
  • 1 lemon juice mixed with common salt, must be taken two times daily, will relieve back pain.

Treatments
  • Alternative treatments for lower back pain include acupressure, acupuncture, aromatherapy, chiropractic care, the Pilates Method, reflexology, Tai-Chi, and yoga.
  • Surgery is indicated in cases of prolapsed disc, tumors, and other conditions of the lower back. Types of surgery include discectomy, laminectomy, spinal fusion, and BAK cage, among others.
  • For GYN causes of lower back pain surgery may be necessary to correct the condition causing lower back pain.
  • Exercises specifically designed for lower back pain, as well as other types of physical therapy.
  • A pain management specialist provides several ways of treating lower back pain including Biofeedback, pain blockers such as caudal epidural, diagnostic lumbar facet, lumbar epidural, lumbar nerve root, provocative discography, sacroiliac joint, and trigger point injections.
