What Is Medical Anxiety?

Being aware of the changes happening in the body helps people to avert illness which would otherwise prove to be life threatening. But being too aware can rob you off from the peace of life . When a person becomes extra conscious about his health, the constant worrying about sickness and death makes his life miserable.

This is what Hypochondria is which is a somatic disorder and the person strongly feels something is wrong with its body. This is nothing but a health anxiety or medical anxiety that makes people think of every cough as lung cancer and every headache as brain tumor. When doctors confront such patients it becomes a daunting task for them to explain or make believe they are perfectly alright.

They are highly attuned to bodily sensations which most people ignore, every ache and every pain for them is the alarming sign of something grave is happening inside their body. They run to the doctor every now and then to find the exact cause of the symptom.

No doubt they do have pain and some problems and show up symptoms but all are due to anxiety and worry induced symptoms like loss of appetitie, exhaustion, weakness, fearfulness, insomnia, tension, irritability and achiness. Hypochondria usually starts from person's 20's and can be triggered due to certain factors in one's life like medical scare or major illness of relative or close friend.

People start ignoring hypochondriac feeling that the person is brooding too much over small aches and pains. But one should realize that the person has a genuine illness and that is hypochondria. What they need is your help and proper treatments like cognitive therapy or anti-anxiety medication. With this help they would be able to enjoy a happy and healthy life without the thought of being ill.
